3198 Seaford BeachPatrol is a volunteer community group working to protect Seaford’s beaches and Port Phillip Bay through practical clean-ups, waste reduction, citizen science, education and advocacy.

Volunteers meet regularly to remove litter from Seaford’s beaches and surrounding public areas. Rather than simply sending everything collected to landfill, the group sorts the waste wherever possible and diverts suitable materials through recycling and specialised recovery programs. This includes eligible drink containers, coffee cups, straws and discarded fishing line.

The group’s work extends well beyond cleaning the beach. Volunteers collect and record litter data, conduct detailed beach litter audits and participate in citizen-science projects to better understand what pollution is reaching the coastline, where it may be coming from and how it moves through local waterways.

Research has included extensive monitoring of microplastics and plastic resin pellets, known as nurdles, found on Seaford and Kananook beaches. This local data contributes to broader environmental research and supports evidence-based action to reduce pollution at its source.

3198 Seaford BeachPatrol also encourages people to look beyond litter and consider the waste created through everyday purchases and consumption. Through education, community events, social media and advocacy, the group promotes thoughtful choices, waste reduction, reuse and appropriate recycling. While removing existing litter is important, preventing unnecessary waste and pollution can have an even greater long-term impact.

Clean-ups are open to people of all ages and abilities, providing a practical way to care for the local environment, meet other members of the community and contribute to meaningful environmental action.
